NTS is pleased to announce sponsored events at the M19 Conference in Kansas City, February 11-13, 2019. In addition to two series of lectures, NTS anticipates co-hosting a pre-conference event on the topic of bivocational ministry. NTS also plans to offer tours to the campus for interested students, alumni, and friends of the seminary.
Lectures:
NTS will offer two important academic and cultural voices in the form of lectures made possible by the generous support of our donors. In addition to his plenary address, Dr. Douglas Powe will give the Whipple Lunn Lectures on Personal Evangelism. Dr. Powe is the newly tapped director of the internationally regarded Lewis Center for Church Leadership. Prior to this, Dr. Powe served as the James C. Logan Professor of Evangelism at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC. Alongside his teaching duties, Dr. Powe has also served as the managing director for The Institute for Community Engagement, and director of its Urban Ministry Program at Wesley.
Dr. Powe holds a Ph.D. from Emory University and his research interests include church revitalization and urban theology. He is deeply committed to helping urban congregations and congregations in transitional areas to flourish through community partnering.
Dr. Powe has authored or co-authored several books including: Not Safe for Church: The Ten Commandments for Reaching New Generations, New Wine, New Wineskins: How African American Congregations Can Reach New Generationsand Transforming Evangelism: The Wesleyan Way of Sharing Faith. He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church.
The Gilbert Lectures on Christian Psychiatry will be presented by Dr. Mark Yarhouse (Psy.D.) who is the Rosemarie S. Hughes Endowed Chair and Professor of Psychology at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he is a core faculty member in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology.
Dr. Yarhouse was named Senior Fellow with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities to conduct a study of students navigating sexual identity concerns at Christian colleges and universities. He has been a consultant to the National Institute of Corrections to address issues facing sexual minorities in corrections, and he was part of a consensus panel from the American Psychological Association on sexual orientation and gender identity that convened to provide input to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Washington, DC. Dr. Yarhouse is currently the Chair of the task force on LGBT issues for Division 36 (Psychology of Religion and Spirituality) of the American Psychological Association. He was also invited to write the featured white paper on sexual identity for the Christ on Campus Initiative edited by Don Carson for The Gospel Coalition.
Dr. Yarhouse has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and is author or co-author of several books, including Homosexuality and the Christian: A Guide for Parents, Pastors, and Friends and Understanding Sexual Identity: A Resource for Youth Ministers. His most recent book is titled Understanding Gender Dysphoria: Navigating Transgender Issues in a Changing Culture.
NTS offers these events as a lifelong learning resource as we seek to fulfill the second half of our mission: to be a theological resource to the Church. It is our hope that pastors, church leaders and laity alike will find these addresses meaningful and relevant as they strive to think biblically and theologically about the cultural challenges of today.
