Susan Marlowe Middendorf (1943-2025)

The community of Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) mourns the passing of Susan M. Middendorf on September 22, 2025, even as we rejoice in the life and legacy of this profoundly influential woman of God. Susan offered her life to Christ in many roles—as wife, mother, grandmother, colleague, and friend.

From 1991 to 2007, Susan served as Registrar at NTS, a role through which she not only guided hundreds of students in their coursework but also extended pastoral wisdom and motherly care. She was affectionately known as “Mamadorf,” a name first given by students at Southern Nazarene University during her service in the Registrar’s office there. With words of encouragement, thoughtful advice, and sometimes tough love, she faithfully nurtured the students in her care.

Many remember her with heartfelt admiration, describing her as:

“A sweet fireball of holy strength.”

“A kind, beautiful woman admired by many.”

“One of my most prized relationships.”

“A person God used to expand my imagination of what God might have for me.”

“The embodiment of grace, faithfulness, empathy, and love.”

Susan shared her life and ministry with her husband of 61 years, Rev. Dr. Jesse Middendorf, who, following a lifetime of service as pastor, educator, and superintendent, later led the Center for Pastoral Leadership at NTS as Executive Director.

NTS President Dr. Jeren Rowell reflected: “It is very common to hear our alumni from that season speak of how ‘Mamadorf’ could say just the right thing at just the right time to keep them moving forward in response to God’s call. Her strong and loving presence impacted not only our students but also the faculty and staff.”

The community of NTS offers our sympathy, love, and prayers to Dr. Jesse and the family. As you remember Susan, holding to the hope of resurrection, know that the entire community of Nazarene Theological Seminary is lifting you to the Lord and praying for God’s grace and comfort.
