This September, NTS is sponsoring the Earle Lectures, which will be hosted in cooperation with Lanier Theological Library. The lectures will take place online. All persons are welcome to participate at no cost, but you must register to attend this online event.

One of the “hot” topics in New Testament right now is the relationship between John and other writings. These lectures will explore important aspects of the Gospel of John and the Johannine epistles that are similar to—in sync with—the Pauline letters. These similarities are at the very heart of Johannine and Pauline theology and, as such, merit both careful attention and consideration of the reason the parallels exist. Has Paul influenced John, or are there other possible explanations?

This year’s Earle lecturer is Dr. Michael J. Gorman, a New Testament scholar who specializes in the theology and spirituality of the apostle Paul, the Gospel of John, the book of Revelation, and the theological and missional interpretation of Scripture.

NTS professor Dr. Andy Johnson, who serves as the Willard H. Taylor – Roger L. Hahn Chair in Biblical Theology, commented on the upcoming lectures, “I’m eagerly waiting to see how Dr. Michael Gorman’s participationist readings of the apostle Paul and the Gospel of John come together in this lecture series.”

The Earle Lectures are named for Dr. Ralph Earle Jr., founding Professor of New Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary from 1945 to 1977. This endowed lecture series enables outstanding biblical scholars to stimulate further research and study in Biblical literature.
