2007 was the second year for recognizing the Tom Nees Social Justice
Award at NTS. This award recognizes the Church’s commitment to its
calling of serving among the poor in ministries of compassion and
justice.
To be considered for this award, NTS
students are encouraged to submit a 15-20 page paper relating
historical, biblical, theological and social-cultural themes of social
justice. Papers considered for this award connected the mission of the
Church and the nature of the Kingdom of God with Isaiah 61 and Luke
4:14-21. Selection is made by a committee appointed by the NTS
President. This committee reads all submitted essays and selects the
winning paper.
The paper selected this year was written by Jodi L. A. Belcher.
Jodi read her paper in a May NTS chapel and also received a $1,000 cash
gift made possible by donor Jim Copple. Mr. Copple has also provided
funding for an NTS Lecture Series in Social Justice, also in the name
of Dr. Tom Nees. Dr. Nees will be the speaker at the first Nees
Lecture Series in the spring of 2008 (click here for more details on this lectureship and other continuing education events at NTS).
