NTS Adjunct Professor Shapes New Youth Ministry Publication; Prepares to Teach Special Summer Class

Recently, Barefoot Ministries, a company of the Nazarene Publishing House, announced its acquisition of The Journal of Student Ministries, a magazine for faith-based youth workers, from Student Ministry Partners of Nashville, TN. Mike King, an adjunct professor at NTS, will be the new executive editor of this magazine. King also serves as president of Youthfront, Inc., a Kansas City-based non-for-profit youth ministry organization, and is the author of the acclaimed Presence-Centered Youth Ministry (Intervarsity, 2006).

The Journal of Student Ministries will now be known as Immerse: A Journal of Faith, Life and Youth Ministry; Managing Editor Tim Baker will remain in his current role of coordinating the content and serving the journal’s authors.

King stated, “I’m really excited about working alongside Chris Folmsbee (Senior Manager of Barefoot Ministries) and the Barefoot Ministries team to explore new and fresh expressions for training, equipping and resourcing youth workers for the changing landscape of North American youth ministry theology, philosophy and practice.”

This summer, Professor Mike King will teach a class at NTS titled, “Innovations: Cultivating Youth Spirituality in Experiential Environments (CED775).” The course includes an immersion experience* at YouthFront Camp (June 21-25) as well as an online course component (6/28-7/23) that will allow students a chance to contextualize their learning in their own ministry. The course utilizes one of the more innovative approaches to youth formation occurring today through YouthFront, a national youth ministry resource with specialized camp ministries just south of Kansas City (see www.youthfront.com/directions). Participants will have the opportunity to explore the spiritual lives of youth, engage in formation practices with youth alongside recreational settings, and imagine the possibilities of similar ministry approaches in their own contexts. NTS previously offered this course in the Summer of 2008; click here to read what participants shared about their experiences.

Dr. Dean Blevins, Director of the NTS MACE Degree Program, notes “Mike brings both a national reputation and local ministry passion to his courses. We are fortunate to consider him a regular part of our youth ministry and missional church emphases here at NTS.” For more information on registering for this, or other summer courses at NTS, contact the NTS Registrar (registrar@nts.edu or at 800.831.3011, ext 5442) or log on to www.nts.edu/course-schedules.

* The immersion experience does require an additional fee of $200 which covers room and board expenses at the camp.
