The NTS Class of 2014

Nazarene Theological Seminary held its 68th commencement on Sunday, May 11, at 4:00pm at Kansas City (MO) First Church of the Nazarene. The 49 graduates of the Class of 2014 received degrees as follows: 6 Master of Arts (Theological Studies); 5 Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies; 6 Master of Arts in Christian Formation and Discipleship; 25 Master of Divinity; 7 Doctor of Ministry. 16 of the graduates earned additional certificates or diplomas along with their degrees, including 4 receiving the Diploma in Cross-Cultural Ministries (365m Program); and 4 receiving the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Wesleyan Pastoral Theology.  The graduates represented 3 countries:  Canada, Germany and the United States.  Dr. Henry Spaulding, President of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, delivered the commencement address.

Earlier on Sunday morning, also at KC First Church, Rev. Janette Platter represented her class by preaching the Corlett Senior Sermon. The late Mr. Eric A. Mabes, a prominent Kansas City Realtor, established the Corlett Senior Sermon Award in the interest of developing an incentive for more effective preaching. He sponsored the award from 1945 to 1966. In 1966, Dr. and Mrs. L. T. Corlett, as a symbol of their continuing interest in the future ministry of the church, assumed the sponsorship of this award. For many years, until the time of his passing in 2009, Mr. Wes Blachly provided the necessary funding to continue this annual celebration of preaching.

In addition to the commencement ceremony, the weekend was full of various graduation events, including a special graduate chapel on Saturday morning, the graduates’ induction into the NTS Alumni Association, an all-seminary reception on Saturday afternoon, and a celebration banquet held Saturday evening. Members of the NTS Classes of 1954, 1964, 1974, 1984, 1989, 1994, 2004 and 2009 were also honored at a reunion lunch on Saturday afternoon.
