Suggested Resources and Must Reads!
In this issue, we are featuring books recommended by Dr. Douglas Hardy, NTS Professor of Spiritual Formation and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program.

Taking seriously Jesus’ words in Mark 10:15 that “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it,” I commend to you these children’s books as resources for Christian spiritual formation:

Robinson Rabbit, What Do You Hear? by Rebecca Laird (Augsburg, 1990).
This engaging and heart-warming animal drama affirms the great value of listening—a core practice for spiritual formation.

Journey to the Heart: Centering Prayer for Children by Frank Jelenek (Paraclete, 2007).
In simple and clear terms, children are taught, step by step, how to begin a contemplative prayer practice. This approach helps a child cultivate an interior awareness of God and a comfortability resting in God’s presence.

Jesus’ Day Off by Nicholas Allan (Red Fox, 1998).
This is a fun book about a serious spiritual practice—Sabbath rest. Children are encouraged to see Jesus as their example of trust and reliance on a loving Heavenly Father.
