On February 4th, the NTS community had the opportunity to host BJ Johnston’s performance as John Wesley in The Man From Aldersgate by Brad L. Smith. In this one-person play, Johnston made Wesley come alive as he shared how his mother’s faith shaped his personal destiny, how to share your faith with others in a personal manner, how nothing is more important than prayer, that religion is the most dangerous idol of all, and that God has only children—not grandchildren.
After the presentation, Dr. Roger Hahn, NTS Dean of the Faculty, said, “Other than reading hundreds of pages of John Wesley’s Journal, the best way to get to know Mr. Wesley is by listening to and watching The Man from Aldersgate with BJ Johnston. He skillfully weaves together hundreds of quotations and biographical details from Wesley’s Journal in a presentation that is informative, entertaining, and inspirational. The spirit of The Man from Aldersgate magnifies Christ, provides insight into Wesley’s passion for holiness, and reveals the founder of the Methodist and Wesleyan-holiness movements as a humble and self-deprecating evangelist who is passionately devoted to the Lord.”
Dr. Andy Johnson, NTS Professor of New Testament, commented, “BJ’s performance brought John Wesley to life. Not only was it entertaining and informative, but transformative as well as the Spirit seemed to speak through the words of the founder of our theological tradition. I highly recommend BJ for local churches, district events, or for any other gatherings where those present want to experience our rich history through the ‘living voice’ of John Wesley.”
