ANSWERS TO SOME QUESTIONS
The Spiritual Formation Retreat sponsored by Northwest Nazarene University & Nazarene Theological Seminary, to be held immediately prior to the Church of the Nazarene General Assembly in Orlando, Florida, is a prayer resource for Nazarenes committed to the denominational mission of “making Christ-like disciples in the nations.”
Who is this Retreat for? For any Christian believer seeking a deeper walk of faith.
Who is leading this Retreat? A team of five ordained ministers in the Church of the Nazarene. Each has served as a pastor, missionary, and/or educator, and earned the trust of denominational leadership through faithful preaching and teaching of the gospel.
What will happen at the Retreat? In an atmosphere that encourages relaxation, rest, and renewal, participants will be given opportunity to practice the classic disciplines of the Christian faith: prayer, listening to & meditating on Scripture, testimony & sharing, silence, and a celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Meals and comfortable overnight lodging will be provided.
When is the Retreat? The Retreat begins with a supper meal at 5pm on Tuesday, June 23 and ends with a supper meal at 5pm on Wednesday, June 24.
Where will the Retreat be held? The Retreat will be held at the San Pedro Center, a Franciscan retreat center located twelve miles from the Orlando International Airport. The Center provides comfortable, hospitable facilities in a setting that allows for enjoyment of the out-of-doors. This ministry of the Roman Catholic Church gladly welcomes all Christian groups. Their ecumenical spirit is consistent with the self-understanding of the Church of the Nazarene as “a branch of the “one, holy, universal, and apostolic” church who “embraces the people of God through the ages, those redeemed through Jesus Christ in whatever expression of the one church they may be found” (Historical Statement: One Holy Faith, Manual 2005-2009, p. 16).
Why hold a Retreat like this at a General Church of the Nazarene function? The Retreat gives expression to the Church of the Nazarene’s historic commitment to the “processes of spiritual development and improvement in Christlikeness of character and personality” (Article of Faith X, par. 14, Manual 2005-2009, p. 35)—a vital dimension of entire sanctification—and to the education of its leaders in “spirituality” and “spiritual formation” (424.3. General Curriculum Areas for Ministerial Preparation, Manual 2005-2009, p. 194).
Further questions about the Retreat can be directed to the co-directors, Jay Akkerman (JAkkerman@nnu.edu; 208.467.8437) or Doug Hardy (DSHardy@nts.edu; 816.268.5484). Complete registration information is available above. |
