Who should consider the In-Service program?
The In-Service program is designed for those who realize the benefits of a seminary education, but who can't relocate to Kansas City. Most of the students in the In-Service program are pastors who have been in ministry for several years, pastors who are in their first assignments and those who are pursuing a call to ministry, but are still employed outside of the church.
What are the benefits of the program?
The benefits of graduate theological education are invaluable to those who are in ministry. An NTS education allows pastors to engage at a deeper level with a stronger awareness of pastoral identity while equipping the minister with the tools necessary to engage the church in the 21st century. From the practical leadership and administrative courses to those classes which help pastors dig deep into the theological and biblical resources available to them, the In-Service program offers an experience of ministerial preparation like no other.
How does the program work?
The In-Service program offers the Master of Divinity and the Master of Arts in Christian Education to students who wish to complete the program through a combination of "module" format courses and online education. Typically, In-Service students travel to Kansas City 1-4 times per year for module classes and take 1-2 online courses each semester.
What are module classes?
Module classes are 9-day intensive courses, designed to condense a semester of lecture into a managable format for In-Service students. In August and January, NTS offers a morning and evening module, making it possible for students to complete 6 credit hours during one trip to Kansas City. Pre-course reading is often required, as is post-course research/writing. The summer months also afford the opportunity to take many classes in a module format. NTS usually offers three module sessions of classes from may through July. Modules will run over the course of one weekend, making it possible for pastors to miss only one Sunday for each module.
How long will it take me to finish the program?
Students can move through the program as quickly or as slowly as they'd like. Typically, the M.Div. takes 4 years to complete and the MA in Christian Education takes 3 years. Some students will take more time, some will take less. We recommend finding a pace that fits your lifestyle and ministry situation.
What are the requirements to be accepted into the program?
The requirements for the In-Service programs are the same as residential degree programs at NTS. (Application Requirements) The In-Service program no longer requires minimum ministry requirements, so there are no additional admissions requirements for In-Service students.
Are there any additional costs to be in the program?
No. There are no additional fees and you will pay the same tuition rate as residential students. In-Service students, however, must make arrangements for housing during the module classes. NTS offeres several housing options in different price ranges for housing while you are in Kansas City.
Is financial aid available?
Yes. There is no distinction between In-Service and residential students when it comes to awarding scholarships. As long as you apply for Priority Admission (Fall - March 1; Spring - October 1), you will be considered for the same scholarships as residential students. Student loans are also available upon request.
