POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Chaplain at KCRM is someone with a deep love for Jesus Christ and His people; someone with a passion for scripture and music and the role they play in spiritual formation; someone who is able to thrive in a team environment; and someone who is able to reflect the love of God to the broken and hopeless through biblical preaching, teaching, counseling, prayer and music.
LOCAL CONTEXT
Kansas City Rescue Mission is a Christ-centered community offering freedom from the past and hope for the future to the poor and homeless, empowering them to reach their full potential since 1950. Our lead chaplain, Joseph Roberts, is a graduate of Nazarene Theological Seminary; he was called to minister among the poor and those experiencing homelessness in 2004. The chapel staff also includes a full-time Spanish Chaplain and two part-time Associate Chaplains. Our chapel services occur every evening, generally from 6:45-7:30PM, and provide exciting opportunities to minister, not only to the men who come in off the streets, but also to our staff and core group of faithful, diverse volunteers who help sustain this vital ministry of the Gospel through preaching and music.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Preach and teach as assigned by the Chaplain.
- Intentionally pursue counseling and prayer with our guests each night.
- Lead worship through music approximately three times per week (10-15 minutes).
- Meet, greet and facilitate for volunteers.
- Recruit, schedule, develop and mentor volunteer preachers, teachers and musicians.
- Participate in the larger KCRM community as facilitated by the Chaplain.
- Collaborate with the Chaplaincy Team for weekly planning and production of thematically integrated services.
- Continued study of scripture, music and the art of preaching.
- Willing to serve as needed in other areas of ministry at KCRM.
COMPETENCIES
- Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Able preacher and teacher with effective leadership and organizational gifts.
- Can both lead and thrive in a team-based environment.
- Teachable, responsive, and respectful of authority.
- Pastoral presence on the platform, with an ability to engage the heart of the people through preaching, music and prayer.
- Ability to play one or more instruments (preferably piano and/or guitar).
- Able to create and sustain a strong volunteer culture.
- Able to mentor others with wisdom and grace.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated leadership experience in the core competencies of worship, pastoral care, music and Christian education.
- Completed or are in pursuit of a ministerial degree from an accredited seminary or bible college.
- Ordained pastor, or candidate for ordination (i.e. licensed minister), of good standing in a Protestant denomination or the Catholic church.
- A mature, growing believer with a clear understanding of the Gospel, along with the ability to clearly communicate it.
- Committed to spiritual integrity and excellence.
- Committed to the mission, vision and values of KCRM (please see our website).
Exceptions for candidates who do not meet the above qualifications may be made if you are a gifted musician, or have Clinical Pastoral Education experience at an accredited hospital/prison/nursing home, or are fluent in Spanish, or have a background in rescue mission/urban/inner city/mental health/addiction recovery ministry.
