Types of Financial Assistance

New students are automatically considered for scholarship aid as part of their NTS application. After initial application and acceptance to the seminary, scholarships must be applied for annually. NTS Scholarships and other, non-federal, aid is available to all accepted degree-seeking students of the seminary. Therefore, those seeking only a certificate or diploma, only auditing classes, or are in a non-program, do not qualify. Returning students should submit an application by February 15 for the upcoming academic year, which begins with the Fall semester. If you are planning on beginning your studies at NTS in a Spring semester or Summer term, returning students should submit an application by November 1 of the same academic year that you plan to enroll. Summer terms are a trailer/end to the current academic year.

In general, returning students must have a 3.0 GPA to be considered for scholarship awards at the time of academic evaluation. If a student has less than eight (8) credit hours of NTS instruction, but has submitted a scholarship application, the student’s admission materials will be reviewed to determine a scholarship award. Scholarship awards are also partially determined by budgeted funds available. Applications submitted after the priority deadlines will be accepted, but an award may not be available, or may need to be deferred to the following semester.

Many of our students are active participants in their local church, and many churches have educational scholarship programs for ministry training. A great place to start when looking for financial support is within your own congregation. Write up a proposal with your academic expenses and present this to the interested individuals or churches. Those who want to contribute to your NTS student account can send a check to our Business office identifying the student to whose account the payment should be applied.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to eligible degree-seeking students enrolled in at least 5 credit hours (half-time) during the term of enrollment. If you are seeking a certificate or diploma only, or are only auditing classes, you do not qualify for federal aid. If a FAFSA has been filed for the student, eligibility will be calculated and the loan amount will be offered to the student in an official letter sent along with the student’s billing statement, or in a separate package.

To secure a Federal Direct Loan, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online.

The school code for Nazarene Theological Seminary is G02494.

The NTS Financial Aid Office will then calculate your eligibility based on information obtained from your FAFSA and your enrolled hours. NTS will prepare a package for you and send this along with your semester billing statements. The Financial Aid office will contact you with information on what additional steps need to be taken to secure a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan after you have read through the documents sent to you and have returned any necessary documentation to NTS. If you are a new student and/or new borrower at NTS, you may need to complete Direct Loan entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note at studentaid.gov.
