Tribute to Dr. William Greathouse

Dr. William Greathouse (1919 - 2011)
NTS President (1968 - 1976)

A TRIBUTE BY FORMER NTS PRESIDENT RON BENEFIEL
& DR. PAUL BASSEETT, NTS PROFESSOR OF THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY, 1969-2004

“In our tradition, we don’t believe in patron saints…but if we did, Dr. William Greathouse would be the patron saint of Nazarene Theological Seminary!

“The years he served as President (1968-1976) were exceptional years at NTS. His leadership was much more than organizational or administrative; he was the academic and spiritual leader of the institution. He not only taught courses on holiness, he preached and lived as a man of holy character and disposition. He understood and was deeply committed to the Wesleyan notion of the union of knowledge and vital piety. His life, preaching and teaching impacted a generation of students who are in turn discipling others in the way of Christian holiness through their ministries across the country and around the world.

“The legacy of William Greathouse is certainly that of a humble Christian leader. But it is much more. In a very real sense, he was what he hoped to be. He was an example of commitment to Christ and the church, always in the shadow of the cross and the hope of the resurrection. A hope he now awaits in anticipation of the soon return of Christ.”

IN HONOR OF DR. GREATHOUSE, WE INVITE YOU TO MAKE AN ONLINE CONTRIBUTION TO THE NTS FACULTY CHAIR NAMED IN HIS HONOR AND MEMORY: THE WILLIAM M. GREATHOUSE CHAIR OF WESLEYAN-HOLINESS THEOLOGY. NTS.EDU/SUPPORT-NTS
