NTS recently awarded the 3rd annual Tom Nees Social Justice Award to
Tim Gaines, a senior student in the Seminary's Master of Divinity
Degree Program (2008 candidate for graduation).
The Tom Nees Social Justice Award was initiated to recognize the
Church’s commitment to its calling of serving among the poor in
ministries of compassion and justice. To be considered for the award,
NTS students are encouraged to submit a 15-20 page paper relating
historical, biblical, theological and social-cultural themes of social
justice. Students are asked to connect the mission of the Church and
the nature of the Kingdom of God with Isaiah 61 and Luke 4:14-21.
This year's winning paper, written by Tim Gaines, was read by the
author on Friday, May 2, in a special chapel forum. Gaines also
received a $1,000 cash gift made available via the generous donation
of Jim and Colleen Copple who established the award in 2006. Download a copy of Tim's paper (PDF).
The Copples have also provided funding for an NTS Lecture Series in
Social Justice, also in the name of Dr. Tom Nees. Earlier this spring,
Dr. Nees was the featured speaker in the inaugural Nees Lecture
Series.
